Thanks for all who came back to my CQ calls today on Wentwood. 40m was almost a complete bust, high SWR that I couldn’t chase down, which meant I missed out on an S2S with 2E0NON (I think) and was struggling to qualify the summit without draining the battery getting enough signal out. Thanks to Don G0RQL for helping out with spots, but 40m ultimately was a futile band, with only Don and G6LUZ coming back.
A change to 20m, however, worked better and I managed to activate the summit shortly afterwards, and worked another 10 minutes or so on 20m. It seems the way to bring people out of the woodwork is not to call CQ, but to call “Final call” and/or “QRT”
After 30 minutes, my wife decided she’d walk back to the car as some kind of subtle hint, and I half-heartedly tried to find the trig point after I’d packed up, which I must have almost been on top of.
The top of the summit has recently been clear felled Tunguska-style, which made it hard to find to find amongst the root balls of the pine trees. I gave up when I saw my wife back at the car without having found it.
A nice diversionary summit from the M5 northwards to get a GW summit under the belt for the Mountain Explorer award!
Glad you enjoyed the activation, OM. Just a query … what is your name? There were two SOTAwatch spots for you yesterday. One says you are Andrew, another
says you are Carl, but QRZ.com says VK3ARR is Richard!

Definitely Andrew. The previous owner of the call was Richard. I looked at the process to get control of the QRZ.com page and decided it was involved enought that time was better spent chasing and activating SOTA. Richard managed to get VK3RR and dropped his ownership of VK3ARR, and I picked that up when I got my licence.
Not sure where the Carl comes from, but I did see an interesting transient the other day where it seemed the Operator name in the mouseover was out-by-one.
A man of many parts!
“I’m always frank and earnest in my dealings with women. I’m Frank in New York, and Earnest in Chicago” - can’t remember which movie
Was listening last night on 20m. Waited for the spots, thanks Don G0RQL, continued to listen for 60 minutes or so. Nothing, not even a distant voice in the noise.
Will continue to watch for your alerts. Good luck…
