Hi Markus

Congratulation on achieving MG ! Unfortunately I was too late on HB/ZH-010 for a S2S today. Enjoy the fresh air with the radio.

Dear all,

Thank you for your kind words and good wishes. Let me summarize my experience since I started as activator 5 years ago:

First of all it’s you, the chasers, who make it happen: Even when calling CQ 1 hour ahead of the announced time or on a different band: You were there, ready to make a contact! Sometimes there were so many of you that my ATS-3B RX (lacking RF/AF gain controls, RIT, switchable bandwidths) was totally overloaded and I was unable to identify any callsign in the pile-up.

Besides 136 successful activations there was only 1 summit I had to leave without points due to a thunderstorm. Safety first! Within a 50km radius from my QTH there are 73 summits totalling 417 points. The closest one I usually activate by bicycle. It is the combination of ham radio and hiking that makes SOTA so attractive to me.

Over the years, some parts of my equipment got simpler, lighter and easier to handle. Here is my current “bill of materials”:

  • ATS-3B TRX
  • Palm Paddle
  • Elecraft T-1 auto tuner
  • LiPo 4S 2.2Ah, 12V low-drop regulator integrated in supply cable
  • 6m fiberglass rod
  • “Bandspringer Midi” end-fed 13m wire antenna
  • wire winders and antenna bag from SOTAbeams
  • paper log
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 (mobile data normally off due to roaming costs)
  • Oruxmaps app
  • offline maps from openandromaps.org
  • SOTA summit overlay from SOTAmaps
  • Navigator Free for turn-by-turn navigation when driving

Thanks to all individuals who make SOTA so successful by providing either the organizational foundation (MT, country associations) or services like SOTAwatch, database, RBNgate, SOTAmaps or the monthly SOTA News.
