GPS info

PS I should also add, Anquet have recently been publicising the fact that the OS have just slashed the price of 1:25000 mapping. Apparently full UK coverage will shortly be available for the order of £400 so don’t rush into any
purchases!

Thank you

Less than £400, £280 for all UK at 1:25000 if you download it or £300 if you want it providing on a USB memory stick. More for HD versions. 1:25000 HD is about 27GB of data.

There are bundles including 1:50k, 1:25k, road maps, city maps, postcode maps etc.

As the old price was £3500 it was far too much to consider, but £280 is buttons when you consider that you get the equivalent of 816 paper maps. I’ll be ordering my copy in the next few days.

You can install the data on 5 different devices. I have 1:50k on my laptop, desktop and Nexus 7 tablet. Performance on the (original) Nexus 7 is spectacular when you consider it’s only a dual core ARM A9 based machine.

Memory Map, Mapyx and indeed Satmap all have similar excellent OS offers at the moment!

If you do consider an Android phone based app rather than an actual GPS unit, another one to look at is AlpineQuest.

In reply to VK2JI:

A phone based GPS is not something I’d pick as a primary navigation instrument.

Agreed. Turning GPS on tends to drain the battery of smart phones quite quickly and it is inconvenient to keep turning GPS on and off. I take the phone to self spot and Satmap, which has great battery life
