G4SGX/P first activation

Well that went well, (ish).
I learnt a few basic rules.

  1. DO NOT rely on your phone for time, get an old fashioned wrsitwatch.
  2. Take insect repellent, it was those midges that eventually atopped stopped my activation as I was getting eaten alive.

I shall post some info on Kisdon as although it is only 1 point it was quite tricky to find a way up without having to scramble up a very steep bank on all fours, with a dog in tow not exactly easy.

Many thanks for the QSO’s Rogans seat tomorrow if I can get my LiPo charged somewhere by tonmorrow.
I also discovered my FT857ND is rubbish without some sort of roofing filter for CW.
Any strong sig within the 3kc pass band de-sensed it awfully. Apologies for any repeat requests.

Congratulations for your first one!

Well 1st activation for you, unique chase for me so win-win

I also use a FT857 for activations, it is a great rig but agreed that you definitely need a CW filter. There are some alternatives to the stock Yaesu one, I use the INRAD #712 300Hz CW filter.

Enjoy SOTA Fever!

Hi Iain,

Noted that you had chosen Kisdon as your first activation - probably a first in itself! Well done as it is not the easiest one to start on, but at least the ascent is relatively short. Rogan’s Seat will certainly be more of a challenge in endurance terms!

Sorry to hear about the little pests. Yes, repellent is essential in the summer months and you’ll soon add other things to your kit. Probably sun tan lotion will be next if you don’t already have it.

Hopefully catch you on a summit soon.

P.S. Agree on needing a CW filter. Get a 300Hz one - my 857D has a stock 500Hz filter and it is far too wide.
