Arrived at 14:30 and decided to setup opposite the radar station, which was a little more practical than doing so on the scrubland behind it.
There were a lot of dog walkers around and a lot of dogs mess which hadn’t been picked up.
Not something i’d normally choose to mention, but it really is everywhere, which when running wire antennas, poles and coax, becomes a significant and unpleasant hazard.
The cloudbase was hanging low over the hill, making it a little chilly and damp. Once i had the G5RV setup, i connected the radio and started transmitting earlier than planned on 40m.
I soon had around 13 calls logged, including some regulars, and had a quick try on the 2m handheld, which was the third time i’d attempted to use it, and was no more successful than previously.
I returned to 40m at 15:00 and heard a few stragglers calling and responded and added them to the log.
Being a grotty day, and with the aforementioned hazards, as well as having family with me, i opted not to stick around to work any other bands, so quickly packed up and returned to the nearby car park.
Hoping for some more pleasant locations on my upcoming activations.
From the photos, it looks like you’re in the Fens! Had a peek at the OS map to find it slopes quite steeply off to the south. Handy having a public road running over the summit too.
A good stiff upper lip displayed dealing with the hazards under foot! I activated a couple of summits in France on one trip where “les crottes de chien” were a serious nuisance. The mast fell over onto a pile of the stuff at one point - I carry a packet of wet wipes these days as a result.
But is that a half size G5RV and presumably resonant on 40, 20, 15 & 10?
