Since the Coast to Coast path has been made a National route flagstones have been laid over most of the upper parts of the ascent from the west/Kirby Stephen side. This will prevent erosion which was increasing and make for an easier walk up.
These are reclaimed industrial stone flooring and still have evidence of their previous life in the form recesses for machinery fixtures and some appear to have remains of thick layers of paint and tar splashes and one stone is dated 1833 with beautifully cut lettering.
