G/LD & G/NP Region Managers

The reason is in 2007 East Cairn Law became a Marilyn and the incumbent AM was a friend of Richard’s or John’s and had been Shanghai’d into being AM. I was promoted to AM because I was prepared to do the paper work to add the new summit so I could get 1st activation and he was desperately trying to find a willing volunteer to take over! The rest is history. It had taken my predecessor 4 and bit years to find a fool prepared to take over never mind another 6 RMs as well.

Do region managers serve any useful role? It seems to be a redundant layer of “management” to me. I’m a region manager and I have had nothing to do for well over a decade.

I am also in that role for OE/OO and if there are no changes in summits it is fairly quiet but everyone is free to:

  • be a promoter for SOTA in the region by for example give talks at local ham clubs
  • organize meetups/ SOTA days
  • answer questions of guest visiting
  • support the Association manager
  • run local diploma initiatives
    and so on

Yes they do but mainly in new associations. Some AMs get help/input from their RMs when there are updates to be done.

Probably of limited value in a geographically small Association such as G but arguably necessary when the Association is large with significant regional differences.

Agree. In the early days of my now former RM regions I did a fair amount of local research and documentation. Once done it tends to not change much.
