FM satellite SOTA on Saturday

I heard you very intermittently, apologies for any QRM from me. It was just too low in the sky.

But many thanks for encouraging me to give sat another go.

After today’s successfull double activation I am pretty sure I should name my stint Aloha from Ireland via Satellite  It was very quiet on terrestrial VHF with only a handful of QSOs and I never managed to make more than two contacts from Preban Hill. However satellite made all the difference and saved the day! Seven QSOs on Preban and four on Annagh Hill. I felt like a little DX at moments  Thanks for the chase folks!

I’ve actually heard you quite well John (at least your callsign is pretty clearly recorded on my dictaphone), only wasn’t sure are you were calling me or someone else

Alex, that’s very useful to know you heard me. I think my problem is reception. I’m only using a cheap 3 element UHF Yagi and it sounds as if it isn’t up to the job. I was transmitting 5W into a 5 element 2m Yagi which from your report was working quite well.

I need to start saving for something better in the UHF department.

So, I am going to venture another summit tomorrow, Saturday 3rd. If all going to plan I should be on Arderin 6 pointer EI/IE-019. There going to be two SO-50 passes. The first one at 11:47, but I could miss that as driving time could be tight, will see. The next one at 13:28, if not frozen I’l try to be on it.

The first pass is a bit low for me from my home QTH but it should be much better on the second.

I’m still learning but will listen out. It will be cold. Wrap up well!

I may not make the first pass John, unless I be travelling quckly. My travel time should be around 1.30h (according to route planner) and then around 20mins to the summit. I hope to save a bit on driving time and then should be on time. However second pass is not a problem unless frozen to death  I will be listening for your call carefully!

Alex,

I got confused with the times and set up for 13:32 which was just as the satellite was setting.

I heard you call twice and I was only using a dipole, I replied to you but not sure if you heard me. I didn’t heard any other stations reply to you.
I havent worked anyone through a satellite before, so maybe i was doing something wrong at my end.

I heard you clearly today Alex but I couldn’t get through for some reason.

I’ve made a video which I’ll post soon when it is ready. You will hear your voice perfectly at the end of it!

Okay lads, thanks for trying me out! The satellite was quite temperamental today with some blank carrier QRMing intermittently. I’ve actually heard MW0…/P and asked to come again several times, but nothing … I guess that was you Pete ? I’ve made just a single QSO after that with S55MC having the sat already at 10 degrees and kept receiving till it went down to 2 deg!
It was not a bad activation otherwise with 9 terrestrial VHF QSO done, but it is definitely worth having a sat option, especially for remote locations.

On the first picture is my satellite antenna acting as a terrestrial with UHF 5 el beam removed until sat comes in.

Yup, that was me.
I didn’t hear you coming back to me though, maybe it was having a temperamental phase.

Next time gadget, next time.
