First MCSOTA outing of the year.

A good forecast for Friday after a “challenging “ week at work made it an easy decision to head for the hills.

It was also mild enough to get the bike out for the first MCSOTA run of the year.

A run down the A701 to Broad Law GM/SS-029 fit the bill. The sun was out and the roads were mostly dry although some of the early corners were taken a little “threepenny bit “ I soon got my rhythm back.

It was a wee bit windier than I expected when I arrived at the Megget stone but sunny. It was a pleasant walk up in the sunshine and cool breeze.

I had barely setup and it was straight into s2s with M0JIA on G/NP-009, this set the trend for the day with another six s2s , five of them on 2m to other local summits including s2s to GM5ALX/P on GM/CS-030 for a complete. 40m had a good run of chasers but 15m didn’t have any so I tried 20m for a few qso’s out to Europe.

Despite the hazy sunshine the breeze was cool and it was eventually time to pack up.

The run home was more fun on the A708 along St. Mary’s Loch then the B709 and A703 back to Edinburgh.

It was a lovely day! Plenty of folk out on the hills which was nice.

It was glorious in Aberdeenshire, then as soon as I got to Glenshee there was cloud the other side and I was worried I’d picked poorly. This was my third time doing Carn a’Gheoidh, and the previous times I’d walked up in the cloud and saw nothing. So I decided to treat myself to the Cairnwell chairlift, and tick off an easy munro, The Cairnwell.

It was busy on the hills, sunny day, easy access from Glenshee, so I knew I couldn’t set up in the summit cairn. There’s another cairn a little further along the path if you were walking to the munro top, Carn Bhunnein, that I used to get out of the fresh breeze. Did try some 2m SSB but I got bored after 5 minutes , and switched to FM to see the IC-705 waterfall alive with so many conversations going on. Several summit to summits, including @GM4KNU on GM/CS-023 (which is on my list to do), and then it was time for me to get going as I was on school pickup.

The cloud had mostly moved on, still a little on top of Glas Maol, although that had gone by the time I was back at the car park. Lovely day, and I could’ve sat up there for hours!

I called in on Fraser on the way home, for a cup of tea in the 18C weather, and pick up a lifeprotips book:

Great weather on Friday to be out. Andy thanks for the the S2S and complete. 2m was busy, just as well as the crimped (not well) plug detached itself from my hf linked dipole coax. Explains some recent variable results on hf. Good news the 817 appears to still be working properly.

Alex thanks for the S2S and the attached map shows in red the cycled section and in blue the walked part.

The cycle track is great apart for about 30 or 40 metres of pushing after the stream crossing at the bothy, circled in black. A great remote feeing summit.
