I’m hoping KX0R George will see this. I set up my MTR3B V4 Currahee Mountain Topper radio and Just OK antenna on the Green Mountain around noon yesterday. We had limited time so all I managed was one contact to a POTA station in CA.
But it is my first time setting up the rig on a summit and I worked the station in San Francisco.
Since I only made one contact I get no points, but I entered the QSO to log the first of what I hope will be many SOTA activations.
Welcome to SOTA. My first two activations were one QSO each but I was soon having great success with lots of QSOs. The secret is to alert and spot yourself (or let RBNHole do it).
I’ll be stalking you next one, CJ! I think there is a Colorado “Groups.io” thingy. If you were to post your intentions there 24 hours in advance you’ll probably evolve a “los cuatro bobos” following to get your basic 4 fairly quickly, regardless of band conditions.
To be honest, Ruth suggested we have a hike up the Green Mountain trail to see if we could find a grouse they went looking for a couple weeks ago. As soon as I heard “Green Mountain” I tossed my up-to-that-point lightly used QRP rig into my backpack and said “Let’s go!” On the drive over I suggested we hike to the summit. So it was really an accidental launch of my SOTA career. A fun and rewarding day.
Those summits in the distance with snow on look awesome. Looking at the mapping, I guess that is Mt Jasper and its neighbours? How long do they have snow on them?
I can see Colorado will need adding to our ‘places to visit’ list now…
We just moved here last August and now that I know my way around the county roads pretty well, I am learning to navigate the mountains. I first had to confirm that I actually had the right Green Mountain, as looking at the SOTA summits I see there are FIVE Green Mountains in the Front Range section of W0C, namely 085 that I activated, and 044, 107, 149 and 171!!
I’m pretty sure the most prominent photo of a peak, the one framed by tree branches, is Long’s Peak 14,259 feet (4,346 meters) in the Rocky Mountain National Park.
We can see it from our back deck so it’s shape is familiar. If you are referring to other photos, I have not figured out who they are. I do have an app that will show me the peak names as I am looking at them that I should use more often!
Yes, we certainly do have plenty of summits to activate not far from home.
It was very nice while we were on the mountain, but we could see weather moving in. By the time we got home - 45 min drive - the last photos show it was probably raining on Green Mountain. We actually got some rain here too, which we sorely need.
Congrats on your first activation. The Currahee looks at home on that rock. Give it more happy activations, I have the earlier version with the 7 seg LED readout.

Good for you! That’s one QSO more than I made on one summit where, after I had gotten all set up, I was beset with a swarm of some kind of flying stinging ant-like things. I fled.
Ha! No, this was in southern California, W6/ND-326. I don’t know what those little demons were, but it was very, very unpleasant. Some flying ant-like thing. And I was all ready to transmit, too!
the earlier model used a single 7-segment display. You got your current frequency (khz only) in morse in your headphones. Various segments were lit to indicate how much your RIT had taken your Rx off the tx frequency, a much different user experience than the Currahee provides.
