I know many outside of the US have followed the SOTA expeditions of Steve accompanied by Rooster and Peanut
Subject: [nasota] Farewell Rooster!
It’s with deep sorrow I have to make this announcement …“Rooster” goat died suddenly last night of unknown causes …his trail buddies will soon be scattering Rooster’s ashes on many SOTA peaks throughout western NA

I agree that a new friend is needed, Ron. Maybe a young black and white goat named Rooster II, with the nickname “junior”.
Odd thing…on October 12th, I was talking with Steve about the health of R & P, knowing their normal lifespan. I certainly didn’t foresee this, though, only three weeks later.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Rooster,it was the YouTubes of Peanut and Rooster that first drew my attention to SOTA. I had never heard of SOTA before then, when i saw Steve and the goats on a hike to Mount Herman. We had a great time watching the goats eating the local bushes and rock climbing while Steve was busy activating. I loved the YouTube when Rooster ate Steves log sheet.
Condolences to Steve and Family and Peanut

Shame on you, Richard. Though they may be inquisitive, and like human babies investigate with their mouths, goats are vegitarians, and certainly not cannibals.
In comparason, the more delinquent sheep on some of the G/NP hills are known to try to terrorise walkers into parting with their sandwiches, some of which may contain beef, or even worse, lamb!
With much sympathy from Dave, G6DTN (born under the sign of Capricorn)and his goat-loving XYL, Janis.
Helen and I were saddened to hear the news of Rooster’s death. We had been following Peanut and Rooster’s adventures (before NA-SOTA) for quite a while on youtube.
We were privileged to have met Rooster and Peanut (and their human) at the beginning of May this year. Two road trips were planned with one starting at Albuquerque heading up to the Four Corners and back to Albuquerque via Santa Fe. A surprise e-mail from Steve asking if we would like to meet the goats meant a big re-jig of the route up to Colorado Springs for a unique opportunity which could not be missed.
We have fond memories of the wonderful day hiking with Rooster. With him being top goat he often just stood in the way or tried to bump us off the trail just to keep us in our place in the herd; being new-comers we were definitely at the bottom. A few pictures are here;
Our sympathies go to Steve and family and Peanut on the loss of their buddy.

I think the bleat of Sotagoat from my phone will always remind me of Steve’s videos and the two goats Rooster and Peanut. Rooster may have QSYd to another place but to many of us I think his voice (or one like it) lives on in the audio band and in iphones the world over.
