Even a backup plan needs a backup plan

I had planned to activate Mount Kearsarge, W1/HA-010 today, but the impending storm Fay made me think closer to home. Went instead to Prospect Hill, W1/CR-015, and no more than five minutes into the hike to the tower I was inundated with mosquitoes and flies, and pulled two ticks off of me. Turned around and went back to the truck.
Not to let a day off go to waste, I drove another hour to Quabbin Hill, W1/CR-013, and as a reward got to operate from a picnic table. Got my first SOTA CW QSOs. Thank you to all the chasers who suffered my very poor, slow speed CW.
Of note, when you’re operating a new rig, as I was (second use of my new KX2), bring the manual with you. I made a number of menu changes on the fly including bringing my key speed down from an unworkable 22 wpm to 16. I probably wouldn’t have been able to operate without the manual.

Well, it worked! Nice to QSO even though the band condx were pretty poor.
I could just barely make you out, but I haven’t heard anyone from New England
for quite a while on SOTAs.
