Does height matter?

In reply to MM0FMF:

The one thing your map of Shining Tor does demonstrate, is how difficult it is to get into GM from there. In fact, just getting past Yorkshire is no mean feat.

Population density is a bigger factor.

Population of Scotland: 5,500,000 (approx)
Population of Chesire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside: 6,453,901

So you have a huge number of people who are almost LOS to Shining Tor (the horizon distance is approx 50miles from 559m ASL). For GM, you have a smaller population spread over a massive area.

Thanks for the info Dave. You were perfectly readable
on Leith Hill, so it’s a pity we weren’t able to make a
QSO of it - but thanks for responding to the CQ call.

In reply to ALL:

An interesting discussion… Leith Hill Tower did offer
an appealing height advantage, but the site was swarming
yesterday so I kept well away from the crowds instead.

Hmmm, think I have a solution to the balancing act of height, weight, set up time, etc… a large helium filled balloon with a halo and masthead preamp mounted beneath it, guyed and fed by a good length of semi-rigid low loss cable… The balloon could also be used to lighten the load of the backpack en route to the summit. Just need a large transit van to get it to the parking spot… assuming there’s room to park a large van of course…

In reply to G4OIG:

According to Helium Flotation - How Helium Balloons Work | HowStuffWorks
a twelve-foot diameter helium balloon will lift 57 pounds, which
should be plenty… that’s more than Mike 2E0YYY carries uphill
