Cardputing on Whernside

Where’s the fun in that?!

Spot on David!

It’s surprising how many summits now have 5G although it often drops back to 4G when you try to use it.

The fun is getting everything working. The additional QSOs are pretty much free - like I said before, I look at the view and eat my lunch whilst FT8 is doing it’s thing.

I get that. But automatic QSOs are still the devil’s work!

Thanks for the voice (ssb) s2s today.

It got very cold not long after we spoke and I had to pack up despite having my shelter up today.

It used to be very rare that I’d do HF SSB but since I now have the FT817 with me for the 2m SSB challenge I was able to work you. I still prefer CW though. It’s unlikely I’ll ever do FT8 from a summit unless it’s using a self contained unit I’ve built myself and I have no plans for that.

Mine’s having its 3rd birthday soon. But the battery is starting to wane (in cold temperatures).

This whole USB-C debacle means it’s tempting to get another one. I personally thought the Lightning connector was quite robust (though a USB-C connector is far better for connectivity - direct to QMX, with no adaptor for example).

The way the Cardputer looks reminds me of the Jupiter Ace. But can we program it in Forth?

Oddly reminds me of this:

I used to have one many moons ago. Don’t recall it being good though. The keys were very squishy for a start!

This as well:

Write some new words from some old words and then put these words onto a screen (or maybe a different screen) to make even more words.

What a palaver. I did try Forth back in the day. It was easier to skip the Forth and code striaght into Z80 assembler.

A few years ago I had the chance to buy a Jupiter Ace from Blackpool rally for £10. I declined and regretted it since. Its one of the few of the 1980-1984 machines thats missing from my collection. I don’t want one so much that I’m willing to pay todays prices.

I see there’s a port of Forth for the Raspberry Pi Pico. I don’t think I’ll bother though as I’m having too much fun programming it in Rust.
