Can you see it?

Thought I would share an interesting photo I took on my descent from Wild Boar Fell (G/NP-007) on Tuesday 04/06/2013.

I was at the altitude of about 440m when I took this photo.
My car was parked in the valley at an altitude of 270m so that leaves about 170meters from my straight line of sight above my car and the farm it as parked close to.

If you can’t see it, click on the (magnifying glass icon (zoom In) then use you your mouse to scroll into the photo …… can you see it

well spotted

I am use to seeing them above me not below me  and I am very lucky to catch it seeing the speed it was doing, they were going through about every 30 minutes for few hours so i had the camera ready but still was lucky…

" Rumack: Captain, how soon can you land?
Captain Oveur: I can’t tell.
Rumack: You can tell me. I’m a doctor.
Captain Oveur: No. I mean I’m just not sure.
Rumack: Well, can’t you take a guess?
Captain Oveur: Well, not for another two hours.
Rumack: You can’t take a guess for another two hours? "

A film which is still funny 33 years after I 1st saw it.

I’d have said it’s a microlight.

well Andy, if microlights can do the speed this thing was doing from now on i’ll be staying well away from them

Yep, definitely a plane.

Most probably a Tornado or Eurofighter Typhoon.

We regularly get them in the Lakes this low and even got buzzed by one during an activation of Muncaster Fell one afternoon. I assume they were curious about the roach pole antenna at full height !

Maybe I need an aircraft warning light fitted to the top of the roach pole !

In my defense I was trying to ignore what the XYL was talking about whilst appearing to be hanging on her every word and at the same time looking on the phone display without appearing to look.

Ah, one of those. Yes, they do go fast and low! I had one on Beinn Chaorach CS-071 a couple of years back. Noisy beasts.

Wales is good for SOTA and low fly spotters!
The famous Cad West or Mach loop is the place to go!

In reply to M0KCB:

I had one buzz past me on an activation once, I think it was Pendle Hill last September & on that occasion it may have been a Typhoon. It is not a Typhoon or Hawk trainer on your photo so it will most likely be a Tornado, which are quite common in certain areas as Liz has mentioned.

Thanks & 73,

Heh. Back in my youth I was doing a geology field mapping course, and we were sitting on a hillside somewhere near Cautley Crag, eating our sandwiches. There was a very loud noise, and a couple of jets of that ilk (whatever they were flying thirty-mumble years ago) almost rearranged our hair as they came over from behind us, and disappeared off down into the valley before us…

Hi Pete, you shouldn’t have sent me this link  … won’t be going there tomorrow but will definitely look at paying a visit to this location for a free air show … now where did I put my anorak and long lens

Nice photograph of a Tornado GR4, wings are at approximately 45-50 degrees geometry for high speed manoeuvring through the valleys.

I can’t make out the crew, sorry.

I remember over 30 years ago I was rock climbing on the Milestone Buttress of Tryfan and at frequent intervals the trainer jets would come along the A5 at just above the telephone wires, and then drop down past the trees by the tea shack, continue north along the lower valley and then zoom out somewhere near Cwm Ceunant. As we sat on one of the stances taking a break, one came along but clearly misjudged the little dive over the trees and dropped completely out of sight - we waited for the smoke but he must have pulled up really hard and he climbed vertically out of sight with a great roar! When we went to the tea shack later we looked for the blue bricks but there weren’t any!

Had I been at my desktop (which I am now) I’d have linked to Aviation Photography by Mark Jayne
which has some of the most spectacular photos and videos that I’ve ever seen from the Mach loop.
Info on the loop and viewing points here
http://www.mjaviation.co.uk/MachLoop.htm

Add in SOTA summits from the database

The HD videos are downloadable.
How many summits can you spot here?

Be warned they are addictive!
