SSB on 2m in Brittany and Normandy

Please excuse the automatic translation. I hope it’s not too bad.

My goal is to establish at least one SSB contact on 2m/70cm during each activation in 2026.

I will be in France in May. I hope to activate several summits in Brittany and Normandy. I will be equipped with an HF radio to qualify each summit, but I would also like to establish some contacts on 2m or 70cm using SSB.

Will I need to call in French, or will locals respond if I speak in English? If I need to call CQ in French I will try… everyone will get the same report though “59” hi hi.

I could temporarily join any local groups (WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.) that could help me?

There is a 2 day vhf contest on the weekend 16/17 May with most european countries taking part.

Also the Tuesday night activity contests also take place in other countries , but I’m not sure of the exact timings but the days will probably match the uk ones - 1st Tuesday - 2m , 2nd Tuesday 70cm.

If nothing else, it gives a guaranteed level of activity and standardised exchange.

Edit: You might need to get the lawnmower out after 3 years
