Anyone know about import duties

Note that you do need a US postal address (that the FCC can send letters to if needed) to obtain a US amateur licence.

Martin uses the address of a relative in Florida, which is legal. His US call can be used only in the US.

you may also have to pay VAT on the freight charge too, not just the cost of the goods.

Late to the party. I often order from the USA but for lower cost items I have it forwarded to a freight forwarder in Oregon with 0% US tax and then get it forwarded to New Zealand (rather than using FEDEX, DHL or whatever a firm uses). There are many freight forwarders but make sure that your item is insured in case it gets lost or, more importantly, damaged.

Firms use Fedex, DHL etc. to prevent fraud and to make sure it arrives safely. It is the advised method for high value items.

One needs only to see one of the youtube videos to see how some just throw parcels, even labellled “fragile”. The USA is not unique in that respect, I used to pick up my wife just outside a small post office and have at times seen a parcel (that was dropped) kicked as a soccer ball into the back of the van.

Trying to avoid paying tax may result in your item confiscated and a large fine. A family member had that happen, thought he was clever, NOT!
