Can any Alex Loop users out there recommend a good method to mount the loop on top of a trekking pole? I could then guy the trekking pole and avoid carrying a tripod in the pack.
Thanks & 73,

Barry - I use a home brew Alex Loop that has a 1 inch PVC fitting on the bottom - I carry a 4 foot section of 1 inch PVC that I use as a mast that also doubles as my “trekking” pole (yes I’m cheap) perhaps you could use something similar with PVC fittings - you can zoom in on my pictures at QRZ.com for a peek.
Barry,
You have me thinking now about also eliminating the tripod. As a first step I looked at my trekking pole and measured the section just below the topmost. It is 5/8" diameter which tells me the inside diameter of the top section is 5/8". If I was to take a razor knife and carefully cut into the top of the grip to expose the pole, could then find maybe 6" of some dowel or PVC or copper pipe of that diameter that would slip into pole top. I could glue a fitting to it that would then use WB0USI’s reply to build a PVC pole upward to then mate with the loop.
Onward!

Hi all,
I cut away the top of the grip on my trekking pole, turned a plug on the lathe in aluminium (“aluminum”?) to a close fit in the ali tube, drilled it and tapped it for 3/8-24 thread, and fixed it in place with engineering adhesive. It now takes all sorts of aerial fittings…
Easy if you have a lathe or a friend who will do it. My lathe was a “Taig”, a tiny American modeller’s lathe. No need for “heavy” engineering.

Thanks for the responses I hesitate to maul the grips on my Leki poles. There is a threaded camera mount adapter that I can install in the top of the grips and maybe I need to use that and create a PVC “socket” for the Alex Loop that can thread into that camera adapter.
Please keep the ideas coming!
