Barry, all being well, I hope to stay at the Invercauld Arms, Braemar in Feb (if the snow gates are open!) I hope your kettle works
Thanks to Andy FMF for saving me a great deal of planning with his recent trip.

Barry, good to see you out again.
Steve, just ask if you need any suggestions or info. If you can get down the Linn of Dee road then you really must as itâs just wonderful. Thereâs quite a few excellent summits down there plus of course the serious big stuff.
Meall Alvie and Craigendarroch are must do summits there. Nothing challenging about them at all. But the payback in the views available massively exceed the exertion needed to get up them.

However, the definition of the activation zone does not alter and
become within national borders.
The corollary of this ruling is that there exists part of the activation zone from which the summit cannot be activated. This is a slightly unobvious definition.
This may however force us to look again at the issue of border
summits!
Yes, I think you should. As things stand, the other side of the border can be a âdifferent summitâ for the purposes of one rule and the âsame summitâ for the purposes of another. If that is intended, so be it, but it needs spelling out. Consider carefully the case in which the relevant associations have different activation zone parameters.

Tom, I see your point. No argument there and the logs will be adjusted accordingly.
However, nobody racked up 70 points in the S2S award. I am not even actively participating in the S2S award and I very strongly reject the insinuation that I am out for easy points!
These contacts were made in the spur of a moment, standing on a unique SOTA summit and discussing this very fact - thatâs when I had the (apparently not so) brilliant idea that we can make S2S contacts, not considering the âactivationâ zone rule. Was I wrong? Sure - mea culpa.
This may however force us to look again at the issue of border summits!
Not really sure why since, as you pointed it out in your post, it is clearly regulated in the rules.
I think we can close the books on this issue but feel free to contact me offline if you want to discuss the âspirit of the programmeâ further. My thoughts about that would be outside the scope of this post.
Matt/KĂËMOS
No problem Matt. Thanks for adjusting the logs. There was defnitely not meant to be any insinuation that your actions were intentionally outwith the spirit of the SOTA programme. They clearly were not - it was a totally fabulous expedition very much in keeping with the spirit of SOTA.
But one of our rules (with which I have personally long been uneasy about) caused confusion and we will now be looking at this in detail, which is a good thing. Yes you were in the same activation zone, so QSOs between you shouldnât count, but the way the rules were set up, there was obvious ambiguity which we now intend to address.
My email address is good on QRZ.com if you want to contact me with the further thoughts you mention. The S2S points are added automatically from your chaser log entries BTW.

Kettle is always ready to go and the hotel next door has 76 malts and at least one real ale (currently Spey Stout which, when spoken quickly, defines its effect on the mind!).
We are in the real Tomintoul, not the farm just outside Braemar which masquerades as here, so you have another hill pass to cross and several more snow gates to negotiate!

Ah! The Linn of Dee, that brings back some fine memories, staying at Muir, and camping among the trees near the Linn, drinking at Mar Lodge, trekking into the Cairngorms via the faded grandeur of Derry Lodge. Not too far away you get a 2000 foot start on ES-012 and CS-030 from the CairnwellâŚmust go there again before Iâm too old!
Re the Linn, its before my time, but a famous climber once swam down it - totally unbelievable!
