A windy BrownMuir GM/CS-120

Well, sorry to all the 40m chasers who noticed my spot on CS-120 this morning. I was trying a new rig, Cyclone 40, that I finished building recently. I’ve used it from the home qth and although it seemed a little low on volume was serviceable. Given the wind and flapping of the bothy bag, the noise was too much and I couldn’t pick out much bar the strongest signals so had to qsy to 30m and use the weber tribander.

I went up the hill primarily to test this new rig but also to see what 140mW from the sw20+ was capable of. I called for some time before the first contact but got 4 between 1103 & 1112 before the calls stopped again. I gave up and decided it was lunchtime, so returned home (I live only 6 miles from the hill).

Anyway, for interest I have included what reversebeacon.net spotted me as, and when I got the 4 calls:

TF3Y MM0GYX/P 14064.1 CW CQ [LoTW] 3 dB 18 wpm 1057z 14 Dec

It’s not often I receive 31db from my home qth and I’ve never seen 51dB!

CQ Sota:

1104 EA2PI 599 449
1109 OH2NOS 449 529

My antenna was an inv vee at 5m apex and was ‘all over the place’, but maybe the propagation was unstable too.

Hi Ian - a near miss!

You were just announcing that you were QSY’ing to 20m when I tracked you down on 30M, but my doublet wasn’t tuned. By the time I had it tuned you were gone - but the few seconds that I heard you you were a cracking signal for such low power I reckon ~S7. Not a trace of you on 20M.

Here’s to our next one? I’m possibly out on Tuesday (work & wx permitting) - a lightweight CW activation only?

In reply to GM4COX:

Hi Jack, I’m sorry to hear I qsy’d while you were preparing to call. The calls dried up and it was fairly wild up there.

My qrpp was on 20m, I was abt 5w on 30m. I have a few days off over the festive period and aim to get out a couple of times. Work is seriously impacting on my sota activity!!
