I hadn’t seen my pal Ollie for a while and planned a visit for the weekend to catch up.
I wasn’t really thinking about hills but the weather forecast looked good and I wondered about Schiehallion. I’ve seen it’s distinctive shape from other hills but have never walked up anywhere so high before, so was a bit wary.
We made a plan with Dun Coillich as a backup, helpfully the summit of Schiehallion is visible from Ollie’s kitchen window so when having breakfast we could see the top was clear.
A short drive to the car park and a bit of faff with coins in the pay and display then we were off. The walk has a great path up to the boulder field then a bit of care is required to get up to the actual summit.
The wind was biting cold as we got to the top but after some photos we found a sheltered spot in the sunshine to setup the antenna.
I wasn’t sure which antenna to take but in the end used my usual 6m pole , HF dipole and flowerpot for 2m. With Ollie’s help I got it hoisted and sat with my arm round the base to hold it in place. Solo I would probably have just done 2m handheld but it was good to reach a bit further on HF. 38 QSO’s in total starting with s2s to Fraser MM0EFI on GM/ES-053. HF got me out to Greece in the East, New Hampshire in the West and the Canary islands to the South.
A fab day out.
