A couple of years ago, I activated Gun G/SP-013 on Xmas Day in the morning. Unsure if I would even qualify it, I was most surprised to leave the summit with 95 contacts.
Last year, I activated Gun on Xmas day again and it seems to have set off a bit of a trend with a whole heap of activators going out before their Xmas lunch. Last years haul was a staggering 140 contacts including two s2s one of them with Alistair M0BKQ/P on Scafell Pike G/LD-001 of all places, the other was with Karen 2E0XYL.
I’ve spoken to Alistair at a couple of rallies and he has tells me he’s planning an activation this year. Which summit will be down to the WX but knowing Alister, it won’t be a one pointer.
I’ll be back on Gun this year (despite getting drenched last year,) only for a couple of three hours due to lunch commitments. If you have an easy local summit and can get out for just a couple of hours, I can thoroughly recommend an Xmas morning activation, which should produce plenty of contacts, some S2S and probably one of the most enjoyable activations of the year.
Given fair weather we usually go for a bike ride while the turkey cooks; I suppose we might fit a suitable summit into the route this year. However, I have a feeling that this would all take longer than the turkey which would not be acceptable
Like you Mike, I am keen to get on the bandwagon. So will endeavour to get out on a hill with 2m FM/SSB as well as maybe HF to give every one a chance. It will be a hill I have already activated though as I want to keep my point scoring for the first 1000 to be exclusively VHF and UHF.
Dave M0MYA and Geoff 2E0BTR have been doing this for years and have got much enjoyment from it!
