Trans-Atlantic S2S QSO Party - 6th November

Anybody know if there will be a Trans-Atlantic event this year. I know Covid is a real threat to the event but as of know I have my alert up for November 6th. I’m just guessing on that date based on the event history.

It needs an organiser so well volunteered Charlie

NA/EU propagation gets better the further you can go into November…but the weather doesn’t.

Anyone know why it was organized for so late in the year given both locations are in the northern hemisphere? For example, sunset is around 1625 GMT in early November at my latitude (54.3N). Doing the ascent, activation and descent in the dark in November weather is a bit of a turn-off for many. Why not in late Spring or summer?

'coz the propagations is better in early November

November is just the best time of year for the NA/EU path on QRP. The Tilt of the planet and all of that is best. That doesn’t mean you can’t work EU at other times, but in lean years (now) we need all the help we can get.

Afternoon in Europe…morning in USA…November…Prime Time.

Out here in Arizona the NA/EU window is very small as it is only still daylight in EU and Arizona simultaneously for a few hours.

Heh Heh! This reminds me of my younger days. I was a surfer
in Northern California… When is the time for the best waves?
Winter~! So, we were out there when it was coldest and the
waves were great! I wish I’d had a camera with me one day when
we were at the snow covered beach at Santa Cruz, CA!

I have learned long ago, never inquire until a volunteer shows up. BTW, I am in for Nov 6 as well.

As I recall AZ is one US State that doesn’t do daylight saving and Mountain Time (MST) is GMT-7. So if I wanted say 2 hours activating [1330-1530z] plus one hour for packing up and descent in daylight [1530-1630z], that would correspond to 6:30-8:30am AZ local time. Would there be many US SOTA activators/chasers so early in the morning?

I guess it’s better for east coast (EST), 8:30am-10:30pm and middle states (CST).7:30-9:30am.

Historically there have been plenty of AZ operators. This is one of my favorite events. You are correct about the timing.

Hi Charlie, well, that’s encouraging. I guess 20m and 17m would be the main bands. I’ve worked US and Canadian stations with my 10W of CW [KX2] and linked dipole on 20 and 17.

The date strikes me as just perfect. We often have some unusually warm sunny days around that date.

Let’s hope for a good Indian summer in 2021.

P.S. In Spain it’s called “veranillo de San Martín” = little summer of Saint Martin and San Martin day is November 11th.

Guru, you are making some of us northern Europeans jealous.

And not just warmer, at a latitude of 42.8N, longer hours of daylight.

Hi Andy,
Our sunset will be at 16h53z that day. Just about half an hour later than at your location, but, trying to make you a bit more jealous, enough time to work some few more transatlantic S2S, taking advantage of the grey line enhancement
We’ll see what we get in reality at the end of the day…

Indeed, I thought that I had already posted this date Charlie, maybe in another thread, but on checking I couldn’t find it. Anyway, as has been said, November is the best compromise between the deteriorating weather and improving conditions, so we have traditionally settled on the first Saturday in November.

Pre-Covid we also ran an event in April timed to coincide with the QRPTTF event, but a large part of EU was affected by a second wave of the pandemic this year, so I didn’t suggest that one was held. There wasn’t one in April 2020 of course for obvious reasons. Hopefully we will be able to hold one next year. I think the April event will become more interesting as propagation improves in the solar cycle.

Well this side of the pond it runs from early afternoon to early evening. The core hours are 1300z to 1700z, but there will be action from 1200z and possibly after 1700z subject to conditions. The descent is usually a headtorch affair, so summits need to be selected with this in mind. I descended in a snow storm in 2016, but for that first event we chose the 19th, so I suppose it was not that much of a surprise.

Don’t worry Malen, I got the job years ago when I first mentioned it back in 2016… but in truth, the event organises itself. :grinning:

So, diaries out… Saturday 6th November 2021, 1300 - 1700z +/- personal choice of timing. :grinning:

NA/EU S2S QSO parties are some of my favourite operating events. Count me in if at all possible.
