2026 SOTA Challenge (Part 4)

As often the case Brian, you’ve missed the point. The ‘rule’ you quoted is about how points are given wrt to distance and does not clarify the question of whether S2S QSOs get activator points or only chasers points.

I think you are being disingenuous as you had plenty of time to clarify the ‘rule’ (assuming you knew it) in your dialogue with Richard @G4TGJ. One assumes the MT decided the rules even before they were implemented in software. It was perfectly legitimate for me and others to seek clarification, and your defensiveness is telling.

Thanks a lot for the challenge. I have a question. How is this scored? Uniqe call per summit oder per band?

I think in my case, alle QSO`s where scored, is this correct?

Andy, please restrain your tendency to be abrasive. I don’t want to have to invoke the AUP

How could it be otherwise?

At the time I did not know whether the problems reported were due to a glitch, finger trouble, or a code error so clarification could only be limited. The final authority on such matters is VK3ARR.

“tendency to be abrasive”- so it’s alright for you to insult me. What I said was true: your reply to me did misrepresent the issue by quoting the ‘rule’ about distance and points awarded, which was irrelevant to the question asked about activator S2S points under the Challenge. And it’s true, you have done that in the past.

Well, no one expects the MT to be perfect and it’s quite possible some situations weren’t discussed and ruled upon. But many posters asked the question seeking clarification. That wasn’t implied criticism of the MT, it was ‘seeking clarification’

That’s fine, and it’s a pity you didn’t state that at the time. I hate even to hint at criticism of the MT as they do a good job and I agree with their actions 99.5% of the time BUT anyone from the MT could have replied to those activators who said their logs yielded no activator S2S points and who wanted to know why.

Someone could have posted something like “You should have been awarded activators points for a S2S. We don’t why you didn’t get them, Maybe it’s the way you entered the log, or the format in which it was uploaded, or it’s a software bug, but we will look into it and get back to you.”

If you take it as an insult, just bear in mind that you accused me of being dishonest, using a fancier word. Better leave it there. Move on.

I’ll make this my final reply as this discussion isn’t going anywhere useful.

I said you had misrepresented my query with your ‘rule’ quote, Misrepresentation can have many causes and it’s not always deliberate. For example, innocent misrepresentation happens when the false statement is made with an honest belief in its truth. Dishonesty would suggest you meant to mislead, and I don’t think you would do that.

I’m terrible when it comes to software and anything related to computers. That’s why the more I read about questions, answers, explanations… explanations and even more explanations about how to upload the challenge logs, I confess I went into a kind of panic (or maybe it’s better to call it anxiety…).
Today I did my first activation of the year, JA/HG-243, and I combined it with the U/VHF Challenge. It didn’t turn out the way I expected, but at least I got my first points for this Challenge.
And uploading the log was the complete opposite of everything I had been reading—simply simple and easy.
I hope that during 2026 I can bring the same enthusiasm I had for the “10 Meters Challenge.”

Unfortunately it still doesn’t seem to work for me. Here are my 2m SSB contacts in my activator log details page for today’s activation of G/NP-008:

The relevant S2S log:

I would have expected the 200km to appear against both contacts in the details page.
My challenge activator score:

The distance includes that from my previous activation so it clearly isn’t giving credit for the S2S contacts today either.

I tried that with the first activation and it made no difference.

Your brutal honesty with yourself shines through! :joy:

Although I suggest you are doing yourself a major disservice! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve cleverly caught a bad cold😀… so I can’t get out and take part until the vast majority of the “bumps in the road” have been flattened out.

Keep up the excellent work.

Bad luck, Gerald. I recommend sipping hot whiskey with a dash of lime - it won’t cure you but you won’t care!

Good idea!

I’d love to have that… sadly my part time job (on standby) involves me driving. So when I’m on call I’m alcohol free.

Maybe Tuesday night if I’m still feeling rough :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve spotted the issue - I had to impersonate you and then step through the log line by line to see where it was tripping up. I’m back at work today so I will push a fix in between the mountains of email.

Cheers,
Andrew

The 5x10⁶ posts on this topic are inversely proportional to my desire to take part.

How faintly ironic.

This is live now. For S2S uploads that aren’t counted, edit the upload, verify and resubmit and it should score correctly now (modulo some other edge case)

Another Question Re entering chasers Locator Grid for the Challenge.

I have gone through the locations of the folks I am likely to have as a chaser and worked out their Grid reference where their QTH is. Would it be ok to tell them what that Grid is so they can then tell me when I am on a summit trying to score a contact with them. My House is at PF96HD55. I might write them in the back of my log book I take with me to SOTA so I have the grid ref with me.

The reason being with the grid ref for some of the summits I visit will be in the same grid as the chasers being PF96 so is this the reason for some confusion some people are having uploading for the challenge. Do we need a 8 digit grid upload.

Hope your holiday was not too traumatic Andrew, with all the work you had to put in to make it work.

Just confirm with them they are at their normal location and then yes, this is sufficient.

6 digit is required.

Cheers. I know their locations because we visit one and other for coffee mornings or help with ham radio related projects with a BBQ for lunch etc.
