Using Winlink to retrieve Spots for S2S

Bottom line up front:
Activators who are out of cell phone range can use a built in function Winlink (saildocs actually) to retrieve an all text version of the sotawatch page. This can come in handy for finding S2S opportunities.

Procedure (I used rms express, but you could generalize to whatever email program you’re using):

  • Open a new email
  • Put “INQUIRY” in the To: field
  • Put “REQUEST” in the Subject: field
  • put “http://sotawatch.org” in the body of the message
  • Post to outbox and transmit
  • Wait about 2 min and hit the CMS again and you’ll have an all text version of the latest spots and alerts from the sotawatch homepage.

You can actually use this function to retrieve any page that is under a certain size limit.

Hey nice! Thanks for the heads up. Just tried it. Wanted to see if I could get the WWFF cluster spots also, but no joy there. Guess they’ve got too much going on on that web page. Also was able to go in via APRS and read the sotawatch page as well - using UIView and sending a message to WLNK-1. Actually, after sending via RMS Express via telnet connection, I got a notification on APRS running UIView that I had an email pending. Pretty slick. Now to try it out via HF Winlink and VHF APRS for the real test before I head out into the boonies…

Geez, if I could get my work site web page to display, I’d never need to come back into cell svc range and could stay out and about!

Thanks again for the info…

Hmm… I also just learned that you can use APRS2SOTA to get the last 3 spots directly by sending “/spots” to “SOTA” if you’re a user of that service.
