Unactivated and infrequently activated summits in Scotland

Considering that the Scottish Association is one of the oldest associations, we still have a fair number of unactivated summits along with a number of infrequently activated summits. This down to the relatively low population density of Scotland compared to the number of summits in the association. However, we do have something called a “Colwyn”! Colwyn MM0YCJ’s voracious appetite for summits is putting the rest of the GM activators to shame as he hoovers up summit after summit, many remote involving a lot of travel and some serious effort to climb.

For your interest here is a list of the never activated but valid summits:

Hi Andy

A few from both categories on my hit-list for this year if I can make it past Border Control !

Just hoping no-one else gets there first :-s

I’m trying Andy! Done my bit. At least I got some of the few remaining unactivated GM/SS summits before those southerners got them!

Hope to be back on the hills soon after my back injury, got a few days off end of this week so going to try a few wee hills to see how I get on. Won’t be any of your list above but I’m sure the chasers won’t mind as long as they get some points.

The summits above are even out of my range - and I stay in Scotland, I have about a 3 hour drive to Tyndrum from home. I’m sure Colwyn will get through most of them by Christmas - there is only 332 sleeps left you know.

A lot to do in Scotland! After last years vacation in the Pitlochry area which was hit by torrential rainfalls the family has decided to head somewhere further south…

So you have experienced our good weather then!

many remote involving a lot of travel and some serious effort to climb.

That’s an understatement. It took me about 8 hours of cycle and walking round trip to do one of the unactivated Corbetts I did last year - GM/WS-114, Aonach Buidhe, for just 4 points too.

I’m coming up for a “raid” at the end of March… a few unactivated ones on my list (assuming no one gets there first!)

GM/NS-064, Beinn Tharsuinn

That’s a lovely hill, done many many years ago (PR - Pre radio).

Lovely hill… what a fantastic understatement. For those who haven;t seen what the the Loch Monar countryside is like I offer you this photolog of one of the Munros about 10km back along the ridge.

EDIT: Have I got the wrong Tharsuinn ???

We both have the wrong one :frowning: I was thinking of the same one as you.

I didn’t know there were two. Ho hum.

Edit: The one we are thinking of is GM/WS-142 Beinn Tharsuinn - sorry for the confusion.

Edit again: Ah! Colwyn has done the only activation of this one!

Great Pictures Andy you live in a great place even with the challenging cold weather.
My mothers ancestors are from Scotland way back when, they came to vk5 as free settlers in the 1830’s.
cheers
Ian vk5cz …

While it is interesting and even a little surprising to see how many summits in Scotland remain unactivated or rarely activated, I hope people realise that the database takes care of details like this for all Associations, if you bring up the summit list for any region of an Association the Activations column will show at a glance if any summit is unactivated or rarely activated. That database really is a beautifully designed bit of kit!

If you GM & MM’s don’t get a move on these summits will get activated for the first time by us “English” activators  I use quotations because my gran is from Edinburgh and my family has it’s own tartan and my brother in law is Glaswegian

“While it is interesting and even a little surprising …”

I don’t think it’s surprising. I’m looking outside at the white stuff falling from the sky just now

oi, don’t forget the Welsh…

I’ve got white stuff falling from the sky, too - but it is going “ping” against the window and bouncing off the ledge!

I always used to prefer doing my scottish summits when the scree was covered in a nice blanket of snow to kick steps in!

Some of them are indeed surprising, though! I mean, the incomparable summits of Liathach activated once in a dozen years, preposterous! Or Fuar Tholl, only a couple of miles from a road and a railway station? I mean, I can understand that many hams are doing it for the points rather than the summits and will pick off the easier targets first, but some of those rarely activated summits are classics that would be on the wish list of anybody who loves the hills!

Oh well, “different strokes…”

Brian

(And now the sun has come out.)

Apologies Gerald! I should have said the English, Welsh and Cornish activators will come knocking

I watched Tir Is Teanga on BBC Alba last night when they featured an ascent of GM/NS-024, stunning scenery, I toyed with tackling An Teallach in September, but ended up in the brew pub instead. (I did have my mother in the car at the time!).

Is the weather better on Eastern Scotland summits, I have only found one that has been activated the once GM/ES-065 Benaquhallie 3rd party report.
Only a 1 pointer but still worth a visit if your in the area, lucky enough I will be up that way next week working so fingers crossed I have some spare time.

Depends what you mean by “better”!

Currently there is less snow to the east of the Cairngorm plateau and ES-065 is in positively tropical Aberdeenshire - BUT, if the weather decides to come from the north as promised then batten down the hatches and forget it!
Unless you are equipped for sub-Arctic conditions (and have the appropriate winter weather skills) do not even consider an expedition onto the Cairngorm plateau (where a lot of the ES summits are) as this is possibly the most hazardous region in the UK and we have enough statistics and claimants of the Darwin Award without adding to them.

If in this area I can usually be counted on for a coffee/tea/beer/dram depending on which side of noon you were to appear.
