Neat work Jaakko, so that interfaces to your mobile/ PDA? Any circuit
diagrams?

The cables go to the Yaesu VX-7R, 9 V battery and Garmin GPS. I think the OT1+ could also be used as simple terminal with KISS firmware, but I have not tried that yet. Normally I use the standard firmware. The circuit is the same like for the bigger OT1+ box, but I put the LM335 outside to measure the ambient air temperature. The PSK31 firmware looks also interesting, could probably connect the tracker to ATS3B.

The http://aprs.fi gives an idea for the coverage in different regions. Just unzoom the map and press ‘Show all’ in ‘Track call sign’ box.

In reply to all: An old saying, but true every time : If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

Seems if the audience can’t help, and 50/50 doesn’t throw any light on it, the only option left is to phone a friend.

Perhaps we’ll be able to spot by mobile phone again by the time its warm enough for this wimp to get out on the hills again.

Hi Dave,

I’ve tried using Spotlite on two summits recently and my hands have been too cold to press the correct buttons on the keypad. Phoning a pre-loaded phone number does have certain advanatges!

Hi guys,

I do apologise for not getting to this sooner. Tom had alerted me to this thread - sorry I’m late!

The old sotawatch is ancient, unsupported, large forgotten code which it is safe to assume will atrophy, break and eventually disappear.

It is plugged into (via ugly hacks) the new system. And obviously whenever I change anything in the new sotawatch, it is likely to break.

Having said this, this morning I went and hacked a fix in it and the old spotlite facility now seems to have come to life. However, be warned, it will probably break again as I gradually chip away at developing the new system and website!

Further to my post above, the new spotlite is also working. Same problem as it happens. Moved something and forgot to tell old and new spotlite.

My apologies for the inconvenience,

Jon

In reply to GM4ZFZ:

Thanks for the speedy maintenance visit Jon, but for clarification simple, for me and maybe a few others, what exactly is the URl required for the new one when being used from a web capable phone and a wap capable phone, as I presume the two are different arent they ?

Cheers in advance

In reply to GM4ZFZ:

Thanks Jon. With Tom’s tips on the importance of getting the letter case correct, my phone now works on Spotlite (it has not worked for nearly a year).

In reply to G3CWI:

Maybe someone can correct me on this but I always thought that URLs were not meant to be case sensitive. The reason being that it would be easy to hijack some traffic to a site by having the same URL but captitalised. ie barclays vs BARCLAYS. Opps were did I send my bank details and password? That would be Nigeria, right?

Steve GW7AAV or is it gw7aav

Well you thought wrong then! :wink:

See RFC 1738 - Uniform Resource Locators (URL) and RFC 3305 - Report from the Joint W3C/IETF URI Planning Interest Group: Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs), URLs, and Uniform Resource Names (URNs): Clarifications and Recommendations

In reply to MM0FMF:

Hi Andy I knew you would be there to point me down the right path.

For resiliency, programs interpreting URLs should treat upper case letters as equivalent to lower case in scheme names (e.g., allow “HTTP” as well as “http”).

I was nearly right, but it appears that it only applies to the first part of the URL which I don’t think is very user friendly. We should always bear in mind that the majority of net users are simply users and not cyberstocracy.

One day the meek will inherit the world. That would be the nerds then.

Regards Steve GW7AAV Who is never wrong and when he is won’t admit it ;0)

In reply to GW7AAV:
Well thats v2 working smoothly and thanks for getting it fixed, i really did think it was me. Thanks again it will make things a lot easier. Sean M0GIA

In reply to GW7AAV:

That’s specifically so I can’t setup WWW.BARCLAYS.COM and hijack anyone who meant www.barclays.com!

In a http URL of the form
http://:/?
then the part may refer to a disk file located on the webserver disks. In which case if the OS the webserver runs on supports case sensitivity (Unix/Solaris/Linux/OSX etc.) then the URL will be case sensitive. And if you are stuck with Windows then it wont.

bear in mind that the majority of net users are simply users

Sadly computers are not simple though their users may well be! However, just because some users are simple doesn’t mean we have to limit what the web can do. If users can’t see the difference between an ‘a’ and an ‘A’ then they should see an optician and not expect everyone else to give up the advantage of mixed case URLs. :wink:

It’s important not to confuse ‘simple’ with uneducated. If someone doesn’t know the rules, you can’t expect them to do the right thing. The problem is education.

I get blamed for everything around here…

To be honest Lee, I have no idea! Spotlite simply responds to a standard http request.

On request from Tom I have changed it to allow shortened versions of the variable names. You may replace the given variable names with the following shortened versions and spotlite will still know what you are talking about.

acall = actCallsign
call = callsign
pw = password
sm = summit
md = mode
fr = freq

For example:

Summits on the Air***

This is for those people with phones that place a limit on the length of the URL.

Thanks Jon!

Tom M1EYP

In reply to GM4ZFZ:
I could be useful if these shortened versions also worked for spotlite alerts (currently they don’t in my tests) for activators who may be staying away from home e.g. YH or B&B.

Also could we have:
dt = date
tm = time
cm = comments (both for spots & alerts)

In reply to GM4ZFZ:

Thanks Jon, tried on both kinds of phone and the link works fine.

Cheers
