Sota Poem, just a giggle

I guess I must have too much time on my hands, I just wrote this for a bit of fun, only took 5 minutes, so don’t laugh.

Some sit aloft in any weather --------------- C ----- Am
Some sit at home in a chair of leather ------ Dm ---- E7
one common goal, one common aim ------------- F-- G - Em- Am
to get that report and the summit name ------ Dm7 — G7

Why do we do it we have to ask -------------- C ----- Am
sometimes it seems an impossible task ------- Dm ---- E7
was that a signal that I just heard --------- F - G - Em- Am
was that cw or the spoken word -------------- Dm7 G7- C - C7

Alas, that station signed stroke P ---------- Fmaj7
but it wasn’t aimed at you or me ------------ Em
He’s not on a summit I’m sorry to say ------- Dm ---- Bb9
He’s just out in the field and having a play- Em- Eb7 Dm7 Db7

One thousand points is everyones aim -------- C ----- Am
we must all achieve it to stake our claim — Dm ---- E7
wether mountain goat or a super sloth ------- F - G - Em- Am
or the chosen few who achieve the both ------ Dm7 — G7- E7

One thing is for certain and that’s for sure- D ----- Bm
the more you do, the greater your score ----- Em ---- F#7
and never forget that it’s always a thrill – G - A - F#m Bm
wether sat in a shack, or on top of a hill – Em7 — A7- A+

Very good Mike, perhaps 'EYP could set it to a rousing tune and we’d have our very own anthem to sing whenever we gather together…

In reply to G4MD:

We have had a theme tune since the start

Hi Paul

These thigs come into my head and I write them in five minutes.
Guess I’ll never be the poet lauriot or whatever the title is, hi.
Just a bit of harmless fun Paul, we all need a giggle now and again, hi.

Job done. The chord sequence has been edited into Mike’s original lyrics above.

In reply to M1EYP:
Some of us only do three chords;)

Try this to the tune Fool on the Hill…

Day after day, alone on the hill,
The man with the SOTA addiction is logging his contacts still.
And everyone wants to work him,
He’s even up there after school.
And he never gets an answer …

Calling CQ from the hill,
See the sun is going down.
His antenna up above his head,
He hears the bands closing down.

Well on his way, his head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand SOTA points, talking perfectly loud.
But nobody ever hears him,
Using the radio he had to make.
And he never seems to notice …

Calling CQ from the hill,
See the sun is going down.
His antenna up above his head,
He hears the bands closing down.

And everyone wants to work him,
They can tell what he wants to do.
And he never uses much power,

Calling CQ from the hill,
See the sun is going down.
His antenna up above his head,
He hears the bands closing down.

You have all been out in the sun far too long.

In reply to GW7AAV:

Bah!!! No contest mate, watch out for copyright from the Beatles, nicking their tune, hi.

Well at least our joint effort is our own work Tom, we didn’t have to nick a Lennon/McArtney tune!!

I’ll have to nip down for one of my guitars now and see how your music sounds, hi.

In reply to GW0DSP:

There’s less risk in using old tunes, try swinging your axe at this one:

Lovely climbing weather, the high tops are clear of cloud.
The purple of the heather is beckoning the SOTA crowd,
so we pack our rigs and ni-cads and pick up our fishing poles,
we shrug on our loaded rucksacs and post our intended goal.

The cuckoo mocks our fitness, as the sweat runs down our brows.
That easy angled footpath is a toilet for the cows.
And as the hill comes nearer, we see that it’s truly steep,
and that lovely soaring summit is nought but a bouldery heap.

The skylark trills unheeding as we struggle up the slope,
the summit keeps receding, the same goes for our hope,
as the hill is unrelenting we just have to rest for a while,
a breather, a drink and a photo, then off to the top of this pile.

We’re setting up at the summit, unpacking all our gear,
looking for our butties, and wishing for a beer!
The rig is hissing gently, the antenna is up in the air,
the logbook page is waiting, we no longer have any care.

The sun has thrown a wobbly, the HF bands are dead,
the two metre band is empty, this game is doing my head!
the repeater comes to the rescue, and Spots brings us company,
four contacts in the logbook, it’s time to go home for tea!

There’s thunder in the distance, our walking poles are striking sparks,
while hurrying risks a mischance, we’d rather not wait for the dark,
the rain is falling in stair-rods, the track is awash like a drain,
we’d be sitting in the pub now, if we only had half a brain!

With apologies to Eton!

Not been out (activating) much lately so :-

There is a summit close to me
they call it Rombald’s Moor
But, too the locals it will be
that bog up ‘Ilkla sewer’

You park up by the Keighley gate
a road that’s hard to find
as Rod and Audrey found, to their fate
the bog is deep, if you break through , its up to your behind

Many have tried to activate
this peak on two metres fm
but due to its topography
I do not envy them

To qualify this summit
4 contacts you will beg
you really need, to invoke, the gods
of morse, or even, SMEG

So those that say the worms have turned
or ducks have ‘eten thee’
If you want to get a point
’Thall av’ to talk to me

Chord sequence -

E G A C
E G A B
E G A C
E B E B

That only 4 Rob
Tom - what’s the tune?

Roger G4OWG

Tom - what’s the tune?

House of the Rising Sun - but the ‘E’ should be ‘Em’

In reply to M1EYP:

I always played it in Am
