All SOTA activators with experience on snowshoes or touring
skis are invited to join the 2016 HB9SOTA Snowshoe Excursion, which will include
an overnight stay at the Skihaus Hochwang alpine hut with activation of
HB/GR-158 Mattjisch Horn (2461 meters, 8 points).

summary:
On Saturday morning/afternoon on March 4, 2016, every
individual makes his/her own way up to the Skihaus Hochwang (altitude 1958
meters, www.hochwanghuette.ch) where we will gather for the evening meal. The
fee for the overnight stay is CHF 80.00, including dinner and breakfast. This
alpine hut can be easily reached by taking a chair lift from the town of St.
Peter/Fatschel (midway between Chur and Arosa). There is a train station at St.
Peter for those traveling with public transportation. From the summit station
it is a 20 minute walk on a prepared trail.
Sunday morning (March 5) we get up very early as is typical
for stays at these huts, have breakfast and depart for Mattjisch Horn, likely
between 7 and 8 a.m. This is a safe ascent with relatively little danger of
avalanches in good conditions. From the hut to the summit is roughly 6 km with
an ascent of 650 meters and should take less than 3 hours. After the activation
we return to the hut for coffee and a snack or lunch. Then we pack up all our
belongings and make our way back to Fatschel, either hiking down or taking the
chair lift.
Note that in case the weather is very poor on this weekend
with high avalanche danger, our alternative dates are March 12-13.
The operators of the alpine hut need to know quite soon how
many beds to reserve before they make them available to other people. So if you
