I/TN-089 Col Rodela Dolomiti

Nice activation on August 19 of I/TN-089 Col Rodela Dolomiti.
I was operative on 20 meters and 2 meters (SSB/FM):

  • FT-817
  • 2x Lipo 2200 mAh
  • Clone of Elk log periodic (Wimo)
  • MFJ 1979 5 meters telescopic Stylus with wire counterpoise
  • Home made tripod

During the activation I did the “Sicilia Field Day 2 meters contest” with only six QSO but with a qrb of 350 km.
Then I switched to SOTA with nice 20 qso in 20 meters
I tried also some calls on 145.500 FM without a great success, only two qso, one with out big gun IN3ADF Markus

Col Rodela is non a good choice for VHF and up, but also all the inner Dolomiti mountains are difficult to activate in vhf.

Some summits have a really high altitude, but they are too far from lowlands where there are situated most of chasers. So go for HF in dolomiti!!
The summit of Col Rodela is occupied by a restaurant and I had to find a position a few meters below the summit. The zone is a touristic attraction so expect a lot of people around. I had fear form my stylus and counterpoise.

Hi Paolo,

I’m pleased that the activation worked for you. I agree that VHF FM is a poor choice, and that HF would be much better on Col Rodela.
I’m not sure of the spelling of “Rodela”. My maps show “Rodella” but the database has only one “l”, or is this to do with Italian and Ladin spellings?

I Trentino/Suedtirol all locations have three names:

German, Ladin and Italian.

Depending on the zone the real and local name, name used by the inhabitants is only one.
In this case Col Rodela is the ladin name and is the right one.

Unfortunately most of I/AA summits has the wrong and only italian name, for correctness they should have at least a dual Italian /german or Italian/German/Ladin name.

I know, it seems strange, but in my opinion the correct name should be the one used by the inhabitants.

Unfortunately during the Mussolini era the italian names was imposed by the regime.
