G4YSS: G/LD-003 & Alan Hinkes, 12-12-17

Hi Rod,

Making and finalizing coils is rather laborious I admit. Yes, being out in the cold is enough without it being dark as well, I can understand that too.

I hear that a G5RV and similarly, an 80m dipole, will usually tune against a good ground after strapping the two halves. Just how good it would be is debatable but it should do a reasonable job at pulling in a 160m activation in reasonable conditions from shortish range. I think the main issue is noise but on a summit, there’s none in the day and less at night than a base station would suffer.

73 & GN, John.

Sorry I missed you on 160m John, I got sidetracked! It would have been interesting to try as instead of stuffing my 80m dipole into an ATU, I now have legs that I can clip into it to make it into a resonant 160m dipole. However, its configuration in a plot that is less than 100’ long, leaves a lot to be desired. It has been working effectively on the WAB 160m net.

You may have a more accurate score than my bit of database diving says. The query I used was written for Vicki and assumes you have only logged each, in her case 70cms FM, QSO the one time. In your log you will logged SSB and CW QOS. So you may have 4 QSOs on 160m but with only 3 people coming through and skewing the result as an example.

@G4YSS Here is my view and maybe accurate as well!

I wrote a query to find out if Vicki M6WBA had become a mountain goat on 70cms FM. It produced a score for only activations which were qualified on 70cms FM as Vicki’s log includes 2m and I think HF QSOs. The filters on the DB are confusing for reasons stated many times.

Anyway I plugged John into that and it said he was already an MG on 160m activations. John didn’t think he was. Now John’s a stickler for detail and that made me think… is the special DB query really working. If you only logged a QSO with someone once then it did work. But if you worked someone on CW then SSB it didn’t count that as only 1 qualifiying contact. So QSOs with G3RMD, G0VOF G4OBK on 160m SSB and G4OBK on 160m CW is only 3 qualifying QSOs but the query thought it was 4. It was fine in Vicki’s case.

Well I’ve been tinkering all day to come up with something which copes with this. Learnt me some new DB SQL sorcery in the process

Having run this on a snapshot of the DB from yesterday, this is my view of John’s top band MG status

Hiya Dave,

I did wonder where you’d got to but it might have been a bit early to reach Loughborough, though you have surprised me in the past. You could do that in the future judging by the improvements you’ve been making.

Son Phil told me that you’d been 160m WABing and 80m too in the evenings for some time now. Soon it could be 80m all day. Getting an antenna that should be maybe 250ft long into 100 feet is quite impressive. It works and that’s the main thing.

Here’s looking forward to the next opportunity for some 160m activating and working you with the new config,

73, John

Heck Andy, All that work. Now I feel guilty but nevertheless many thanks! Actually you have brought me a little bit closer than the 973 that my excel log came up with.

I continued updating the excellent log that John Linford sent out to everybody in 2002. It was obsoleted by the database.

If you data sort that and delete all but 160m you can manually go through it and delete any activation where less than 4 contacts were made with four different stations/ ops (mode irrelevant).

Of course the key word here is ‘manually’ implying possible human error. Your analysis is probably more accurate. It’s a fair list. Mostly NP and LD repeats. Understandable how it’s ended up as most contacts were made in daylight.

Very interesting Andy. Thanks again. I can put it alongside my log later on and see where the differences are.

Well… it wasn’t much work as such. I had a query that worked for Vicki and when that produced inconsistent results I thought it would be very useful to get the bugs fixed. So now I have a query (a set of T-SQL commands to ask the database a set of questions) that lets me find out the MG-ness of anyone on a band by band basis. I’ll extend it so it can do modes as well. One day this will appear on the DB so a user can ask “Am I an MG on 10m FM?” and get a score for all their qualifying 10m FM activations. More importantly, these things are used to help Barry when people ask for awards with special inscriptions on them. The work needed doing. This way, I can get you to check your log against my log and see where we disagree. Both of us end up get the work we have done checked by the other.

Anyway, you have the following per band scores (I only did the bands I know you tend to favour).

80m 1942pts
60m 277pts
40m 1216pts
 4m 199pts
 2m 2855pts

Hi Andy,
I can see how useful the results of your exercise will prove to be, especially to Barry but also to the activators claiming. When I claimed MG on 80m, I emailed my sorted spreadsheet to Barry as evidence. When your work is complete, we won’t need to do that any more.

The odd time you might possibly get four different callsigns from three different people. In that case I would manually discount that activation despite the database giving me it. It’s accepted that you would struggle to pick up on that. Maybe it would be down to the applicant to inform Barry.

Whichever way we look at it, I need a few points yet. Better go out and try to get them and maybe a few extra to make sure.

Interesting analysis. I didn’t think I had that many points for 2m but when I think about it, everything for the 1st 2 yrs was 2m until MG was achieved. The reason being I needed a break from heavy rucksacks of the WAB/P era.

Quite surprised by my 4m score. I should try to build on that.

Well done.
Many thanks,
73, John

Until that day, here is a quick and dirty tool that will generate such statistics from an uploaded activator CSV (“Download complete log” button in SOTA database):

https://neon1.net/sota/activatorpoints

I just whipped this together because I wanted to know my own statistics, and hope that it will be useful (and accurate…)
