Or even the 9Ah SLABs, virtually the same footprint as the 7Ah and hardly any difference in weight. However, the 12 Ah SLAB is my weapon of choice, especially when using the FT-857. Bit of a lump to carry, but well worth the effort.

I agree. Yuasa NP12-12, 12 Ah at 12 volt from www.thebatteryshop.co.uk for £24.99. It may be possible to get them even cheaper.

A few years ago I bought a folding solar panel designed for expeditions and charge controller from http://www.ctsolar.com/ in the states.
It has worked well to “top up” a SLAB when camping in the past.

The guy who owns/owned the company is a HAM too and was very helpful with my enquiries.
