EA2/BI-055 early activation

Today Marcial EA2BDS and me made an early morning activation from Mt. Ganguren EA2/BI-055, seeking mainly for VK chasers.
After arriving at 08:30 EA (06:30 UT), we founded a dense cloudy sky and some strong winds, but we were able to set up the FT-857 @ 30w and the linked dipole for 14mhz on a 9 m. pole.
We started soon making some qsos with VK’s with excellent signals, some of them over 59, mixed with some EU chasers. After one hour, and with the wind becoming stronger, we changed the links to 10 mhz, but in that moment, our problems started. More than 8 times, the pole felt down due to the wind, stopping the operation, and leaving some chasers alone after sudden disappearances :.
Later, and still on 10 mhz, some unexpected NA chasers came to us, but only a few of them crossed the EU & “pole-falling” barriers.
Finally, the pole broke just while we were trying to work with a VE2 stn… sorry OM!.
We have had also the pleasure on making a S2S QSO with Egon, OE9EGI/P.
So, good propagation condx with VK (the best I’ve ever enjoyed) but a sad ending of the activation…
We were sorry for the NA OM’s that weren’t able to make QSO due the quick end on our side…
So, sorry to them and thanks to all chasers, specially to the “VK team” that is always there for everybody’s pleasure!

We’ll try again ASAP!

Mikel,

Sad to hear your pole finally broke. I wrote it on the sotawatch. That must have been a strong wind. Anyway, thanks for making the QSO on (my favorite band) 30 mtrs. Today I also reached the 8000 points.

Good luck and hope to work you in the future.

Dear friends,
First of all, than you very much for your calls and S2S QSO last Sunday.
Congrats for the DX with some VK stations.
I’m sorry about the failure of your telescopic pole.
It seems to me that the extended dipole (probably as an inverted vee) together with the strong wind were applying to much vertical force to the telescopic mast.
So far, I’ve always used a vertical telescopic fiberglass pole with the antenna wire inside it. All I have to worry about is making sure the pole remains aproximately vertical and this simple tool used by the fishermen to hold their fishing rods vertical at the beach is very useful most of the times, except when in a very rocky summit.

I bought it at Decathlon for just 5 euro. I have already amortized such investment, hi, hi!
This is the way I always use it:

However, I’m sure this experience you had today will give you even more power and motivation to try another one soon and that one will probably be 100% successful.
Best wishes de Guru - EA2IF

Hi, Tonnie!
FB hear you again on the magic band!
Don’t worry about the pole, it has already made its trip around lots of activations.
Congrats for your 8k points! BCNU!

Hi Guru,
Is the stand made of steel or alloy, I use a washing pole holder from B&Q weight 240g ok on soft ground.

Hi OM,
It’s in steel. You can see it here:
